What is Periodontitis?

Periodontitis, commonly known as gum disease, is a gum infection that causes soft tissue impairment and, if left untreated, can destroy the bone that supports your teeth. Periodontitis can result in tooth loss or tooth loosening, says an oncologist in Kolkata.

Periodontitis is a completely avoidable and very frequent condition. It is frequently caused by insufficient dental hygiene. Brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily and consulting a dentist can significantly increase your chances of successfully treating periodontitis and decreasing your risk of developing it.

Is it a risk factor for oral cancer?

Oral cancer has a complex aetiology, since it is influenced by various risk factors (genetic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle variables). According to a recent study, individuals with periodontal disease are at an increased risk of getting oral cancer. The severity of periodontitis is associated with the emergence of oral squamous cell carcinoma. This study aimed to revise the non-genetic risk factors that may influence the development of oral cancer, with a particular emphasis on dental and periodontal health, says the cancer surgeon in Kolkata.

The research method

Two hundred patients (one hundred with oral cancer and one hundred without) were involved in the study to examine the association between oral cancer and the presence and severity of periodontitis and several risk factors that may contribute to the formation of mouth cancer. The socioeconomic and lifestyle risk variables associated with the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma were determined using a questionnaire customized for oral cancer patients.

Results

According to the study, a substantial association exists between the occurrence of oral cancer and certain socioeconomic characteristics and lifestyle habits, such as an individual's sex, age, education and alcohol intake. Oral cancer occurred at a rate of 57.1 percent in patients with periodontal disease.

Conclusion

Periodontitis can be a risk factor for developing oral cancer individually. Individuals with periodontal disease should be closely followed, particularly those with severe periodontitis and associated lifestyle risk factors. Keeping at-risk patients' periodontal health in check can help reduce their cancer risk, says the cancer doctor in Kolkata.
